ArtBeat Festival Attracts Diverse Crowd with Diverse Cultural Celebration

Stages, tents and booths were erected, traffic was detoured and the streets of Mount Vernon flowed with people. Jazz, rock, hip-hop, salsa and folk music radiated through the streets and parks, reverberating off historic buildings.

Children clamored and congregated underneath tents where they painted copies of classic works of art or designed body art and jewelry. One side of the street featured a medieval tavern offering spirits and refreshments. On the other side of the street a puppet theater entertained families and spectators.

On Oct. 20 and 21, historic Mount Vernon was turned into a cultural kaleidoscope of art, entertainment and education. ArtBeat, a free two-day festival celebrating the Grand Reopening of the Walters Art Museum on Baltimore’s Centre St., attracted a culturally diverse crowd with hands-on art activities, a parade, live musical performances and plenty of ethnic foods.
